La cultura es el conjunto de todas las formas, los modelos o los patrones, explícitos o implícitos, a través de los cuales una sociedad se manifiesta. Como tal incluye costumbres, prácticas, códigos, normas y reglas de la manera de ser, vestimenta, religión, rituales, normas de comportamiento y sistemas de creencias. Desde otro punto de vista se puede decir que la cultura es toda la información y habilidades que posee el ser humano.
El concepto de cultura es fundamental para las disciplinas que se encargan del estudio de la sociedad, en especial para la psicología, la antropología y la sociología. Así se define cultura en wikipedia, y la Real Academia de la lengua se expresa en los siguientes términos; Conjunto de modos de vida y costumbres, conocimientos y grado de desarrollo artístico, científico, industrial, en una época, grupo social, etc.
Y porque entonces aquí definen la cultura puertorriqueña como la unión y expresión de tres culturas solamente, la taina, la española y la africana? Veamos.
Hace varios años atrás, como requisito de una de mis clases de maestría se me pidió hacer un trabajo investigativo. Tema libre. Mi profesor, al que respeto y admiro mucho, nos dio la oportunidad de escoger el tema que fuera. Así que me dedique a buscar mi tema y me decidí por este, Las cuatro culturas que han influenciado enormemente para crear la puertorriqueña. Como buen independentista que es, se rio y me reto a probárselo. Buen lio en que me meti, pero manos a la obra.
Resumiendo el trabajo, prácticamente me dedique a analizar lo que veo en las calles. Hacemos las compras mayormente en Centros Comerciales repletos de tiendas de origen y capital estadounidense o sea vestimos y calzamos con la moda Yanqui. Las comidas, hamburgers, aunque su origen es alemán nos llego con el yanqui, asi mismo el hot dog, las modernas parrilladas al estilo Texano y sus salsas. Mama Mia…la sabrosa pizza italiana, que no es italiana na’, se la inventaron en New York inmigrantes italianos. McDonals, Burger King, Popeyes, KFC son también parte de nuestra gastronomía, mejor conocidos como los junk food centers. Volviendo a la vestimenta, quien no se ha puesto un jean?
Imaginan que economía más yanqui que Walmart, Kmart, Sears, Advance Auto, Pep boys, Dennys, Pizza Hut, Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, Budweiser, Miller, Burlington, Home Depot, Walgreens, CVS, Group USA. Compañías locales organizadas al estilo USA como Pitusa, Kress, Capri. Todas ellas siguen el concepto de las grandes americanas.
En la música, influencias en el rock local, son del rock estadounidense, no el latinoamericano o el ingles. El Hip Hop a calado hondo en nuestros jóvenes también, ayudando a que surja el controversial reaggeton.
Celebramos fiestas tradicionales estadounidenses como el 4 de julio, Thanksgiving, Memorial day, Saint Patricks day, Hallowen.
Me dedique a buscar fotos evidenciando esto. Y encontré tantas que pude colocar más de una de cada tema. Muchas pude tomarlas yo mismo si hubiera querido, pues yo mismo no identificaba cuan influenciada esta nuestra cultura en vestimenta, comidas, música, televisión, radio y muchas más esferas de nuestra sociedad. Es sorprendente.
El profesor analizo el trabajo, y tuvo que, entre dientes, reconocer que lo expuesto estaba probado. Entonces porque se oculta?
Es sencillo. Por razones mezquinas de un grupo de personas que les conviene se perpetúe la colonia, han creado un mito de solo tres culturas y tres idiomas impactando nuestro desarrollo. El asunto es de tal gravedad, que hasta en el sello del Instituto de Cultura se exponen las figuras emblemáticas del negro, el indio y el español, ignorando 113 años de presencia estadounidense en la isla. Incluso un ex gobernador intento oficializar un idioma, el español, en una isla donde miles de residentes solo hablan ingles, y miles más son bilingües.
No solo vilmente se ha ocultado esta influencia estadounidense, sino también la de grupos inmigrantes es la isla, como los corsos. Los dominicanos aquí no han traído e integrado a nuestra comida el mangú y en la música tropical el merengue?. Y los restaurantes chinos ya no son parte de nuestra forma de comer? No son sitios exóticos, son parte de nuestra mesa.
Aquí se ha pretendido hacer creer que la cultura musical es solo seis chorreao o bomba y plena. Y Cultura Profetica, La Secta, Bartolo y los night brakers (quien no conoce a Bartolo, no es roquero boricua), no son rock boricua? La salsa puertorra sale del son cubano. Basket y baseball, eso no vino de África, ni lo jugaba un taino ernu. Barea ni Lee ganaron sus anillos de NBA con un equipo local, ni tampoco Posada o Wlliams sus sortijas de Serie Mundial con un equipo en el Hiram Bithorn.
Estamos hasta los huesos en la forma de vivir en los USA. O acaso no se sienten en Orlando, Kissimmee, o New York como si estuvieran en casa. Yo sí. Y llevo la monoestrellada en el corazón. Soy boricua y nadie puede decir que no lo soy, así como soy ciudadano estadounidense y N. Y. Yankee de corazón también. Me harto de lechón, pasteles, arroz con gandules, frituras y hasta pitorro he tomado. También hamburguers, pizza, hot dogs. Hablo español e ingles, y aun no he muerto.
Así que dejémonos de bobadas y aceptemos de una vez, somos una cultura en crecimiento, hijos de muchas culturas, como lo es mi nación.
