El Tiempo es lo de Menos
El próximo 14 de junio Puerto Rico estará recibiendo la importante visita del Presidente de nuestra Nación. El presidente Barack Obama estará durante unas horas en nuestra Isla conmemorando la última visita oficial que un Presidente hizo a Puerto Rico cuando el presidente John F.Kennedy lo hizo en 1961.
Durante unas cuantas horas, la prensa nacional e internacional tendrá su interés enfocado en Puerto Rico y lo que aquí suceda. Durante unas horas la imagen de Puerto Rico estará expuesta ante el mundo y la pregunta más que inmediata es, ¿qué imagen queremos proyectar? ¿Queremos que nuestra Nación y el mundo vean que somos ciudadanos americanos orgullosos de pertenecer a los Estados Unidos de América o queremos quedar como ciudadanos ingratos que muestran desinterés y repudian la presencia de quien es también nuestro Presidente?
El movimiento estadista tiene que ver esto como una oportunidad de oro. Como movimiento ideológico mayoritario, los estadistas tenemos que acudir en masa a recibir a nuestro Presidente, independientemente seamos demócratas o republicanos. La imagen que debemos llevar ante el mundo es sencilla, Puerto Rico quiere, se merece y va a luchar por ser el Estado 51 de los Estados Unidos de América. Demostremos en una sola voz que somos ciudadanos americanos orgullosos de nuestra ciudadanía y que es por esto mismo que creemos que nuestro terruño tiene que convertirse en el próximo estado de nuestra Nación.
¿Dejaremos que los independentistas se salgan con la suya? Definitivamente no podemos permitir que un grupúsculo le diga a nuestro Presidente que se vaya a su casa. Los planes del Partido Independentista para recibir al Presidente Obama con el mensaje de “Obama go home!” son unos peligrosísimos. Es deber de todos los que nos llamamos estadistas decir presente y dejarle bien claro a nuestro Presidente que esta también es su casa, “Obama you are home!”.
Aunque estamos hablando de figuras históricas totalmente diferentes, el Papa Juan Pablo II estuvo en Puerto Rico solamente por unas horas en 1984. Sin embargo, esto no desanimó a los católicos puertorriqueños. De hecho, en la misa que celebró el Papa en un área cercana a Plaza Las Américas, se dio la concentración más grande de nuestra historia.
Me tomo la libertad de realizar estaanalogía porque es sencillo entender la importancia de esta visita utilizando este ejemplo.Para nosotros los católicos, la figura del Papa representa el escogido de Dios para guiarnos en nuestras creencias como líder de la Iglesia Católica Romana. Por otro lado, para nosotros los estadistas, la figura del Presidente representa la persona en la quien recae la firma final que nos incorporaría como estado de la Unión y quien tiene el poder suficiente para hacer que nuestro ideal pase de lo dicho a lo hecho.
Sin pensarlo dos veces, los estadistas tenemos que decir presente y llevar nuestro mensaje ante el Presidente, ante la Nación y ante el mundo. Tenemos que dejar claro que los sectores separatistas y antiamericanos son minoría. La visita podrá durar unas horas, pero nuestra imagen podría perdurar años y no queremos nosotros mismos ser los causantes de crearle obstáculos a nuestro ideal.
